Impact - Defining Moments


Kumutha's husband works in a private concern in a temporary position. She was feeling financially insecure and so approached ANEW seeking help. She was trained in basic computer skills and further in Desk Top Publishing as she had the aptitude for the course. Currently she earns Rs.7500 and she has also referred her sister-in-law to ANEW to help her to be financially independent.


Parameshwari's husband is a construction mason. She has two children who are supported by their grandparents due to the affordability issues in the city. she was determined to contribute to the family income to be able to provide for the children. She was referred by her friend who completed Home Nursing course successfully at ANEW. She was trained in the first batch of newly started Optometry course. Currently she works in Rajan Opticals earning Rs.6000/- per month.


Mohana was married to an alcoholic and was separated from her husband after a long struggle. She had to support her two children financially as her parents could not afford to support her. She approached ANEW for help. She was trained as a Home Nurse and has been employed for the past 8 years. Currently she is earning more than Rs. 6000 as her monthly income and confidently supporting her family.


Priya’s father is a construction labourer and mother is a home maker. Her elder sister was trained by ANEW as a Home Nurse and is successful in her job. Encouraged by her sister’s financial independence, Priya after completing her 10th Std. enrolled at ANEW for Autorickshaw training and subsequently for Car driving training. Currently, she is employed as a trainer in ABT Maruthi Driving School on a salary of Rs.9000. She also offers private tuitions to women during the weekends and earns additional income. She aspires to turn an entrepreneur, running her own driving school.


Divya's father is a fruit vendor and has two school going younger brothers. She realized the financial needs of the family and decided to equip herself to earn, with the help of ANEW. She completed her basic computer course and an advanced course at ANEW. She now earns Rs.5000 as an audio/video editor.


She hails from a very poor and broken family. She was married very young and was separated from her husband after her child’s birth. After a great struggle, she decided to live her life independently. She approached ANEW and was trained in Autorickshaw driving. She is currently working as an Auto driver in a school, earning a salary of Rs.7000. She enrolled her government school educated daughter at ANEW for a summer course in computer skills, before pursuing her college degree.


KayalVizhi comes from a poor family of 3 daughters. Her elder sister was trained as home nurse by ANEW and is doing well in her job. Kayalvizhi decided to join ANEW for auto driving training and further upgraded herself by enrolling into car driving training. She worked as an auto driver in a school and subsequently worked with ANEW as a trainer. She was a highly self motivated person. With continued encouragement and guidance from ANEW staff, she equipped herself with different skills in her field of interest. She is now a state government employee, earning Rs.14000/month and making ANEW proud as the first woman ambulance driver working at a government hospital in Chennai. Her dream is to own her own property in Chennai and take good care of her mother during her old age.


Nagalakshmi’s father lost his job as a sales person and her family was in a financial crisis. She approached ANEW in a desperate situation and was trained in computer skills. She got placed at the CSR wing of Polaris software lab and is earning Rs.7000/month. She takes care of family expenses, including the rent. Realizing the importance of financial empowerment, she is determined to educate her younger sister with the help of her income.


Srivalli’s father works in a small shop and her mother is a homemaker. Her father could not support the family of 3 daughters with his income. She enrolled into the computer course at ANEW. Subsequent to training, she works at Best hospital as a front desk staff earning Rs.6000 and is able support her family financially. She made ANEW very proud when she along with her ANEW trained friend, sponsored the training fee for an underprivileged woman at ANEW.


Muniyammal, wife of a vendor at a whole sale vegetable market was undergoing a financial crunch when she decided to enroll at ANEW for training. She was not in a position to even bear the commute charges to ANEW during the training period. Today after completion of training at ANEW, she is earning a salary of 6000 as a store in charge.

Demographic profile

  • 75% of the students, as on date, are in the 18-25 year age group
  • Students access ANEW center from over 4 districts (Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpet, kancheepuram) in Tamil nadu.
